First Starter Gives Julie Sebastian First Win as Thoroughbred Owner

FLORENCE, Ky. (Feb. 17, 2017) – A little girl’s love of horses led to the winner’s circle decades later when the filly K Lyn Wins won the third race at Turfway Park Thursday, Feb. 16, giving Julie Sebastian her first win as a Thoroughbred owner with her first starter.

“My aunt had a farm when I was a little girl, and I always wanted to take care of her horses and pet them,” Sebastian said. “It’s literally a dream come true to own this filly and win a race with her.”

K Lyn Wins, a 4-year-old filly by U. S. Ranger out of the Gulch mare Boo Girl, is the only horse currently campaigned by the 41-year-old Sebastian, who hails from Richmond, Ky. She bought the filly privately in June 2016 from trainer Tommy Short.

Sebastian initially worked with show horses at a farm in Bourbon County, Ky. She started working with racehorses about three years ago, shipping horses from Floyd Cobb’s farm in Paris, Ky., to train at the Thoroughbred Training Center in nearby Lexington. Two years ago she gained further experience at the North Middletown, Ky., broodmare farm owned by trainer Alberta Davies.

Trained by Charlie Livers and ridden by Sonny Leon, K Lyn Wins sat off the pace in the $5,000 claiming race for maiden fillies four years old and up before taking the lead with a furlong to run and drawing clear to win by 1 3/4 lengths. The six-furlong race was the ninth start for K Lyn Wins, whose record stands now at one win and two thirds. She was bred in Kentucky by Marvin Little Jr.
