Anybody's guess in the My Charmer

FLORENCE, KY . . . December 4, 2003 . . . The $50,000 My Charmer Stakes at Turfway Park this Saturday has a definite “if” and “maybe” look about it. In the full field of 12, at least 6 are fond of the front. Only a few have run on anything but fast dirt, at least in the past year, and it’s odds-on for showers here over the next couple of days. Ten have never run at Turfway. Two are coming in from months of racing at Woodbine. Several are stepping up in class. One is stepping down. The Turfway track has been known for its speed bias; so far most Holiday Meet winners have come from outside and off the pace.

Take your pick.

Three-year-old My Trusty Cat has been on the board or just off it the past six months, but she’s been running in graded stakes company behind the likes of Yell, Awesome Humor, and Golden Marlin. In January she finished 2 3/4 lengths behind the victorious Lady Tak at the Fair Grounds. The My Charmer could give her the spot she needs to remember the winner’s circle. Terry Thompson rides.

Unlike My Trusty Cat, Glitter Act will probably draw on her Glitterman speed genes and head for the lead. The three-year-old showed she can handle the slop with a win in May and a second by a nose in October, both at Churchill Downs and both in sturdy allowance company. She’s low weight at 115 and benefits from Craig Perret in the irons, but this is her first stakes attempt, and she has stretched to a mile just twice—one of which was her sloppy-track win.

There Runs Hattie is the only My Charmer alum in the race, a 1 1/16-mile contest for fillies and mares. She finished fourth last year, is 2-for-13 at Turfway lifetime, and is one of those likely to head for the lead. Also likely to be at or near the pace are Stonebridge Lady, Affirmed Dancer, and Ravish Me. Sitting just off the pace could be Donnaree, who comes in off a 10-1, $54,900 allowance win at Churchill Downs last month. She’s been in the money 9 times in 13 tries this year, and has won 2 of 7 lifetime starts at Turfway.

My Real Quiet Lady, one of the Kentucky-bred Canadian runners, may join the early leaders. Her wins and close seconds have come when she’s been close to the pace or on it, and she has strong experience at the distance. La Princess Jolie is the other Kentucky-bred who’s been spending her time in Canada. She’s won exactly half her 28 lifetime starts but is looking for her first win from 8 tries this year. She comes in off a short layoff.

The Argentine mare Salzurita is 3-for-8 this year. Her wins have come in mid-pack-to-stretch-run style, and she has experience both in stakes and strong allowance competition. Her most recent win came in the Summer Finale Handicap in the slop at Mountaineer in September. Ellen’s Lucky Star has five wins, one second, and three thirds from nine starts this year but has spent nearly all of her recent career with fellow state-breds in Indiana.

Completing the field is Ponche de Leona, who has raced just three times this year and is still in search of her first 2003 win.

With nearly as many variables as runners, the My Charmer should make a trip to Turfway Park a good bet for Saturday. Gates open at 11:15 a.m. EST; first post is at 1:10. General admission and parking are free.
