FLORENCE, KY . . . September 6, 2003 . . . Kentucky-bred Don’t Countess Out got the race she wanted at a track she likes and took the $75,000 Weekend Delight Stakes at Turfway Park for the second consecutive year. Regular rider Terry Thompson was in the irons.

Breaking from gate 5, the four-year-old filly lost her footing at the start but recovered, and Thompson kept her comfortably in contention four or five back. “She picked it up in the middle of the turn,” said Thompson, “and took off down the stretch,” caught the leader with a furlong to go, and won by 2-3/4 lengths.

“Her last race at Ellis, when she finished third, she had to set her own pace,” said trainer J. Larry Jones. “She doesn’t like that; she likes to have something to run at. The track was playing very fair today and she got the kind of race she likes. You know they’re always gunning for you when you try to repeat. We’ll take it just like this.”

Don’t Countess Out has finished on the board in each of her last 15 starts, 14 of those after Jones took her off Lasix. “She’s one of the few who does better off Lasix,” he said, “even though she has a little problem with bleeding. We took her off and she hasn’t finished worse than third in the last two years.”

The winning time over six furlongs was 1:102 after quick splits of :214 and :452. Sent off at 10-1 over a fast track, the filly paid $23.20, $8.80, and $6.40.

Owned by Southern Pride Stable LLC, Don’t Countess Out is out of Pulaski Countess by Take Me Out.
