Mike Battaglia's Picks
THURSDAY, MARCH 22 (Preview)
CANDRASA showed big improvement in her first start for Kim Hammond. A repeat of that performance would be good enough to win tonight. BIRD STREET stretches out to a mile and a sixteenth and has the speed to make the lead with Ouzts aboard. She is the one to catch. SHAMELESSFI is a solid threat.
ROB AND JON'S GIRL is an eight-year-old veteran who loves this track. She woke up last out and looked good winning at this level. She can make it two in a row with Figueroa back aboard for David Kinder. NATIVE INDY also comes off of a winning effort. She has the tactical speed to be in contention throughout and has to be respected. VIA FRATTINA stopped badly last out but is capable of better.
SUCKER PUNCHED was knocked around leaving the gate last out and then stopped after pressing the pace. He figures to make the lead tonight and gets the nod with Lebron picking up the mount. BODLER is a seven-year-old runner who has shown improvement since moving to the Turfway Poly. He looked good winning last out and is definitely the one to beat. THAMAAN fits in here.
TIZ BEAUTY is a consistent performer against bottom claimers and rates the edge over BELOVED BETTY and APPEALING JULIA, who both take huge class drops coming back after a layoff.
EMMY SHIMMY is a lightly raced four-year-old who gets blinkers for the first time tonight. She looks best against a fairly weak field of bottom maidens. CHANNEL NINE showed big improvement last out and a repeat of that one makes her the one to beat. ZEMO is a contender.
MISS CATWOOD is riding a two-race win streak and has won six of her 12 races here at Turfway. She moves up a notch in class but looks best with Prentice picking up the mount for Jeff Greenhill. VACANZIE INN ran on the same day as the top pick and also won. She is the one to beat but it's a bit baffling that she ran a fifth of a second slower and yet her Beyer was five points higher. RADIANTRITHYM cuts back to six furlongs and will be running at the end.
DISORDERLY CONDUCT had been extremely consistent before his last race, when he was the odds-on favorite and beaten 27 lengths. Maker has worked him four times since that debacle and anything close to his best makes him a winner with McKee picking up the mount. MARK MY WAY drops back to the bottom after an even effort against better and looks like the main competition. HANDY CANDY drops in class and has to be considered.
KENTUCKY KITTEN has been idle since breaking his maiden back in December. He also has been training well and can make it two in a row for Maker and McKee. UNION RATE should get a good trip from the inside post and is the one to beat. PASS SET HIT has the speed to be dangerous.
FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 2018 (Preview)
TIZ SARDONIC JOE is one of two nine-year-olds in here who are still running very well. He comes off of a sharp score last out for Kim Hammond and is capable of making it two in a row with Franklin picking up the mount. SKIFFS BREWMEISTER makes his 79th career start and has won back-to-back races at this level. He should get a good trip from the inside post and will be tough to beat. LAFLOWMYLAXBRO finished a neck behind the second pick last out and has to be respected.
STREET PERFORMER stopped badly last out but figures to be on or near the lead throughout in this one. He drops in class and his best would make him a winner at this level. MORNING WAVES was a beaten favorite last out but has the inside post and Ouzts and looks like the one to beat. SUMMERTIME GAL has been running well and fits in here.
WINTER SPRINGS looked good winning last out and can make it two in a row with a similar performance. HOLD MY PURSE has a solid record here at Turfway and beat the top pick back in December. OWL CREEK will be running at the end.
KITTEN'S COVERGIRL is a lightly raced four-year-old from the barn of Wes Ward. She comes off of a game maiden win on the Gulfstream turf and looks like a solid bet to win this one with Jimenez back aboard. SHARED SILENCE was no match for In The Mood last out but that one came back to run second in the G3 Bourbonette Oaks on Saturday. She looks like the one to beat. DIAL ME has been off since June and moves to the barn of Tom Drury, whose horses are running well right now. No published works are a reason for concern and she may need a race before being at her best.
AGENTMULDER has been very consistent since moving to the Turfway Poly. She looked good winning last out and rates the edge in this bottom claimer. WHEN TH CATS AWAY is also good right now and figures to be the main competition. SUCKER PUNCHED drops back to the bottom and Lebron picks up the mount.
LOVEMELIKEYOUDO comes off of a couple of decent efforts at Fair Grounds and drops in class for her Turfway debut. She looks best with Lebron picking up the mount for Angel Montano. WAVE DANCER also takes the class drop after a third-place finish against better. She posted a recent bullet work at Keeneland and will be tough to beat. SYLESTER YOLY has the speed to be a contender.
COCO MON is an eight-year-old veteran who has been running well against much better competition. The drop in for $40,000 is a reason for concern but anything close to his best would make him a winner for Eddie Kenneally with Declan Cannon aboard. LUCKY RAMSEY and HINTON finished a half-length apart last out and can be expected to run well again tonight in a very good optional claiming allowance race.
DAYIN DEAUVILLE drops back to the bottom and looks like a winner with Cannon picking up the mount for Aaron West. ALLIE GRACE ran poorly in her last two but could wake up in this one. SCAT LADY has been running well at this level and is a contender.
